I’ve been in California for about 3 weeks now. I moved into my on-campus a little over a week ago, and it has been great! I have 3 roommates, and we all get along really well. One of my roommates is actually an NSE student from Vermont. Classes started last week, and they are going pretty well so far. I am taking 3 psych classes, all of which I LOVE! My history class is a bit brutal, but my dad’s roommate is a history nerd and has offered to help me with it. I’m doing my best to get involved on campus. SSU has a lot of adventure and outdoor opportunities which I am taking full advantage of. On Sunday, I went hiking in San Francisco and met a lot of really cool people. I also just signed up for a bioluminescent kayak camping trip that will take place Sept. 7-8. It should be a lot of fun, I can’t wait! The program has tons of other trips throughout the semester such as hiking, camping, biking, white water rafting, paddle boarding, and even skydiving. I’m going to try to do as many of these as possible.
I’ve met some pretty cool people so far. Most of the people in the area are really nice and extremely laid back. I’m definitely enjoying the culture change from conservative South Carolina. Nearly my entire school was born and raised in California, so people’s reactions are usually pretty funny when I tell them that I just moved from SC. People here tend to talk in abbreviations a lot, and usually I have no idea what those abbreviations stand for until I ask. I couldn’t believe that Target, gas stations, and grocery stores all sell liquor in them here. My roommates found it so strange when I told them about our liquor store rules back at home. Everyone is also very big into recycling and environment sustainability here which I love! I have also met a lot of vegetarians and vegans here.
I love how there is always so much to do out here. Whether it’s wine tasting, exploring a hiking trail, attending a music festival, or just going to a farmer’s market, I don’t think I will ever get bored while I’m here. I also bought a bike at a yard sale this weekend, so I’ll be able to explore the area a little more on my own. It is just breathtakingly beautiful anywhere you go out here! I went on a jog near my school the other night and just couldn’t believe how lucky I am to see such beauty right outside my front door!
I honestly don’t know how I’m going to leave in December…South Carolina may be my home but California sure has stolen my heart!
